Did you know that ‘Cebu’ came from the word ‘sebu’ which means animal fat and that it was once ruled by a fat Rajah Humabon also dubbed as the ‘Trader King Of Sugbo’? Now that I come to think of it, how come there are no fat heroes in our history? They can’t be all fakkin’ waif-life supermodels during the olden times right? So cheers to you Rajah Humabon, cheers to being fat and awesome, cheers to all the cebu lechon that you consumed during your lifetime!
I found this painting of Rajah Humabon inside Fort San Pedro in Cebu alongside these unnamed unfat people.
You have to pay Php30 to get inside Fort San Pedro and honestly, I wish we had skipped this stop in our tour because there’s not much to see inside (except the awesome fat rajah of course.) It’s a nice place to lounge around or take pre-nuptial photos in but there are no guides / markers to tell you why this place is awesome. All of a sudden I miss Bohol and their awesome guides.

.. i guess humabon simply loved good cebuano food. hehe.
Truleh! Who can resist awesome Cebuano food right?
It appears history has not always been kind to the plus size folk.
Them historians should take a class on fat acceptance. Big, brown and beautiful ang peg ni Rajah Humabon.
Hear, hear! LOL.
argh. should have been here weeks ago. as far as my memory could access, nung grade 4 ko pa nabasa tong si rajah humabon na to. di ko alam ganito pala talaga siya kataba.
FAT PPL RPRZNT! Hahaha.
Haha natawa ako sa entry na to!
I’m sure some of our heroes are fatter than their paintings
for some reason i did not see the photo of that fat rajah when i came to fort san pedro. maybe it’s just been placed?
Not sure, it was my first time to go there. :]
Hi Ayla,
This is a very informative post. Thanks for sharing. I’ve been to Cebu many times and to this Fort San Pedro but I didn’t notice it. I think I really didn’t pay attention.. your post is a good read, indeed entertaining
Cheers,
Mafey
Thank you Mafey!
I also missed that pic of Rajah Humabon when I visited.
I’m a sucker for old forts kaya medyo na-enjoy ko naman.
Parang andami niyong naka-miss ng photo so I assume na relatively bagong lagay lang siya? I’m not *that* into forts but the trip would’ve been a whole lot better with guides around.
I love the new look!
Thanks ‘te!
That’s why I never went inside. A friend of mine warned me I would be wasting money and time if I go inside. Most of the artifacts have been moved to Cebu Museum. But I like Plaza Independencia. =)))
Sadly, no one warned me about it and we weren’t able to go to Cebu Museum as well.
More reason to go back to Cebu!
I read that Cebu is derived from SUGBO….meaning Flat Plain.
