What we ate in Tagaytay

Weddings and food – these are the reasons why we go up to Tagaytay. Or maybe to stare at Taal Lake but really, why just stare at Taal Lake when you can also stare at good food?

First stop: LZM Restaurant. W says that they serve the best fried boneless bangus but I liked their chicharon bulaklak a.k.a. heart attack in a plate best. I usually stick to the regular chicharon made out of pork skin because other types of chicharon look dodgy but LZM Restaurant’s chicharon bulaklak made me reevaluate my chicharon philosophy. Yes, I have a chicharon philosophy, which includes a ‘No Chicharron ni Mang Juan or other fake chicharon brands’ clause.

Obsessed with Big Better Burgers

Big Better Burgers has been around for about four years already and I’ve only eaten here within the past month. I blame anyone who has ever sunk their teeth on the charbroiled goodness of Big Better Burgers’ burgers without telling me how good it is.

What we ate in Subic

I’ve been driving for about two months now and I’m rediscovering my favorite travel destinations outside of Metro Manila. (I’ve driven to Subic and Tagaytay…and Antipolo.) The traveling experience is surely different when driving as opposed to when I’m riding in the family car or when I’m taking the public bus. I was usually asleep within the first 30 minutes of the ride before and obviously I can’t do that now so I’ve learned to appreciate the journey itself. Naks.

So far, food has been the main motivation behind these road trips. I wonder when we’ll crave for bagnet or fresh strawberries.

First stop: Texas Joe’s House of Ribs. W wanted to take me here because they have really good ribs and an interesting book trading system where you can take a book as long as you leave one as well. Too bad I ordered the beef brisket, and their bookshelf was locked when we got there.

What we ate in Kuala Lumpur

Hello, I miss you all, I’ve been busy pretending to be busy the past few weeks. I’ve been hooked on reading A Game of Thrones, I’m a big fan of the TV series and I’m glad I was convinced to read the books as well. I’m also itching to go somewhere again, travelling is an awesome way to learn more about the world. The last place I went to was Malaysia (Truly Asia) and this is my obligatory food porn post because I’m a fat kid like that.

First stop: Breakfasts in Traders Hotel. I felt like I was on the set of The Kitchen Musical, everyone was so…Asian. ASIANS RPRZNT!

Their kaya is so good I put it on everything.

Baguio in Shaky HD

Spent the weekend in Baguio and I came up with this. Be a darling and waste a minute of your day watching it.

 
I’ve had my camera for about a year and a half now and I haven’t used it for taking videos until now. Sad. Now I’m itching to get a new one even though the one I have is still working fine. (Except for the flash, but who needs flash anyways?) The song’s from Robot Unicorn Attack which I just discovered over the weekend. I know I suck. Thanks W for introducing me to this game and for letting me use your iMovie.

What we ate in Siem Reap

I don’t get why food in Cambodia is expensive. For a country with a minimum wage of 60 USD per month (about 2500 PHP), I thought that the food would be cheap. We spent about 6 USD per person per meal. I did not expect that being a tourist in Siem Reap would be more costly than being a tourist in Bangkok. Boo me for not researching on the local grub before our trip.

They say that Khmer cuisine is a cross between Thai and Vietnamese cuisine. Since I have never been to Vietnam (and the food in Thailand is way more pag-ibig than the food in Cambodia) I say that Khmer food is characterized by ginger and confusion. Amok, a popular Khmer dish, is curry that fell in love with ginger.

First stop: Random restaurant along Pub Street. Fresh from our traumatic experience with crossing the border between Thailand and Cambodia, we headed off to Pub Street to look for food. Pub Street is Siem Reap’s tourist watering hole, much like Bangkok’s Khao San Road, except more expensive.

None of my friends can remember what this restaurant’s name is, we also don’t have photos with its name on and checking our foursquare history and Google maps proved futile. What we do have are stolen photos of one scruffy koya at the next table. Also, this is where we first learned that when they say ‘chicken with ginger’ in Siem Reap they really mean ‘ginger with chicken.’

What we ate in Bangkok

Bangkok is an awesome place to get fat in because the grub is cheap and decent. Their serving sizes are smaller than what we’re used to in the Philippines though so maybe you wouldn’t get *that* fat, tamang taba lang. Plus, they like veggies so it’s healthy right?

Dinners in Khaosan Road and countless trips to 7-Eleven are not included in this post since I forgot to take photos a.k.a. I forgot what we ate as well.

First stop: Tom Yum Kung Restaurant. This was right next to our hotel, the food was a keri but the servers were a bit hot-tempered and inattentive so this was how I ordered in my head, “Kuya, kung di nakakahiya baka pwedeng mag-order, kung okay lang naman. Sorry kung naaabala ka namin.”

Second stop: Street food beside the Grand Palace. We thought that what we saw was shrimp, Ate assured us that it was shrimp but it was not shrimp, it’s not even a relative of the shrimp a.k.a. don’t you dare smile at us Ate.

At the top at Tops

Tops in Busay Hills is where you’d go to see the whole of Cebu City and Mactan Island. Our cabbie / tour guide Kuya Renie advised us that the best time to go up would be at around 4PM so you can wait for the sun to set. You have to pay Php100 per head to get in. There are cafes and covered eating areas inside for when you get hungry. As per Kuya Renie’s advice, we brought food from The Original AA BBQ and bought decent desserts from one of the cafes. The air above is cool and crisp and it’s a perfect spot to unwind and enjoy the city from afar.
