Cebu’s Awesome Fat Rajah

Did you know that ‘Cebu’ came from the word ‘sebu’ which means animal fat and that it was once ruled by a fat Rajah Humabon also dubbed as the ‘Trader King Of Sugbo’? Now that I come to think of it, how come there are no fat heroes in our history? They can’t be all fakkin’ waif-life supermodels during the olden times right? So cheers to you Rajah Humabon, cheers to being fat and awesome, cheers to all the cebu lechon that you consumed during your lifetime!

You have to pay Php30 to get inside Fort San Pedro and honestly, I wish we had skipped this stop in our tour because there’s not much to see inside (except the awesome fat rajah of course.) It’s a nice place to lounge around or take pre-nuptial photos in but there are no guides / markers to tell you why this place is awesome. All of a sudden I miss Bohol and their awesome guides.

At the top at Tops

Tops in Busay Hills is where you’d go to see the whole of Cebu City and Mactan Island. Our cabbie / tour guide Kuya Renie advised us that the best time to go up would be at around 4PM so you can wait for the sun to set. You have to pay Php100 per head to get in. There are cafes and covered eating areas inside for when you get hungry. As per Kuya Renie’s advice, we brought food from The Original AA BBQ and bought decent desserts from one of the cafes. The air above is cool and crisp and it’s a perfect spot to unwind and enjoy the city from afar.

Fabulous Fifties Cafe

This may be the only Food Porn post without any food in it because we got here at around 1AM after we were done with the Sky Experience Adventure’s Edge Coaster at Crown Regency Hotel & Towers so we just ordered shakes and smoked. (Yep, they have smoking and non-smoking areas inside.) Plus, after looking through all the photos below I don’t think anyone would need much convincing to check this place out on their next trip to Cebu.

The Fabulous Fifties Cafe is filled with awesomesauce stuff that I went gaga over. The Pickers is one of my favorite show on television so I know that the items they have inside don’t come cheap. The Fabulous Fifties Cafe is located inside Crown Regency and it is open from 6PM-2AM.

Cebu Lechon Face Off: Zubuchon vs. CnT Lechon

Cebu is almost synonymous to lechon so of course I’d have to have a Food Porn post dedicated to Cebu’s beloved roast suckling pig.

First off, we’re biased, W and I are avid Marketmanila readers hence we would’ve considered our Cebu trip a success even if the only thing we did was eat at Zubuchon. However, everyone from our cab driver to the front desk receptionist at our hotel was telling us to eat at CnT Lechon so we decided to give it a try.

ZUBUCHON
We went to two Zubuchon branches during our stay in Cebu, the one along Escario St. and the one in Mactan. The restaurants are generally small and have less than 15 tables per branch. The service was good (except for when they could not figure out how to work a credit card in the Mactan branch) and the crew were very attentive to our requests.

This is the Zubuchon branch along Escario St. We went there for brunch on a weekday. I loved everything we ordered except for the tomatoes, salted eggs and onions side dish which was a bit too strong for my taste. The lechon was divine, the flavor was very subtle and we easily finished half a kilo. No umay factor thanks to the kamias shake which apparently has ‘anti-fat’ properties so you’d feel less guilty about the amount of lechon you’d consume.

Hello from Cebu!

Just squeezing in a quick post of mini-kwentos about our Cebu trip so far before we go out and meet Gregg for a few drinks.

Mini-kwento #3: I got a new book in Cebu since I left the book I’m currently reading at the apartment. Jonathan Safran Foer’s two books in one hardbound volume at twenty percent off the cover price! Yay! I’ve started reading it while we were waiting for the sun to set in Tops, a popular sight-seeing spot overlooking Cebu City and Mactan Island.
